Intro to your Course and Mark McGee

An introduction to Mark McGee, his photography and how the course works. Here Mark shares his photography journey from the acting world into one of a professional photographer and YouTuber. He also talks about what headshot photography is and how important it is in today’s world.

Lesson 2 – Equipment

Here you will learn about the equipment needed to achieve good results. You’ll look at cameras, lenses, lighting, and essential accessories to get more refined professional imagery.

Lesson 3 – Camera Settings and Techniques

In this lesson you’ll start by learning the basics of headshot photography and you’ll understand the physics behind why good imagery is so hard to achieve. You’ll also learn about specific camera settings for headshot photography, how to control light, and many more pro techniques to send your photography to the next level.

Lesson 4 – Psychology of the headshot

The relationships you will form with your clients will be the key to creating great headshots. The psychology of the headshot is an important concept to understand and one you will learn in this lesson.

Lesson 5 – Lighting set ups

In this lesson you’ll look at how the pros create studio lighting set ups. You’ll learn how to balance key, kick, hair lights and reflectors for varied lighting effects that get guaranteed results.

Lesson 6 – Creating Female Headshots

In this lesson we start to create female headshots. Your taught six separate studio lighting set ups and how to combine natural light with studio lights for stunning effects. You’ll also learn how to make clients feel at ease and how to pose them properly.

Lesson 7 – Editing Female Headshots

Here you’re taught the pro’s workflow in editing headshots. From efficient culling to editing in Lightroom, Affinity and Photoshop. Here’s where you learn how those finishing touches are achieved and to make your learning easier, you’re provided with the Raw files to work along with.

Lesson 8 – Creating Male Headshots

Working with men and women can present different challenges and, in the lesson, you’re taught why and how to deal with that. You’ll also look at nine different lighting set ups and how to pose men properly.

Lesson 9 – Editing Male Headshots

In this lesson, we edit the pictures taken in the previous lesson. Being different skin than the female shoot, further techniques are needed to get a natural clean look. Again, the raw files are provided so you can edit along with the lesson.

Lesson 10 – Creating Outside Headshots

In this lesson we move out the studio into natural light. The day is dull and raining, but Mark applies all his skill and experience to teach you how to make the best out of any situation. We look at five different compositions and how to use reflectors and LED lights to enhance outdoor portraits.

Lesson 11 – Editing Outside Headshots

Working with natural light will give you different effects than working with studio lights. Therefore, the editing process is slightly different and here you’ll learn how to deal with that. And, as usual, you are provided with the raw files to work along with.

About your Tutor

Based in London, Mark McGee has been a professional portrait photographer since 2011. Over the years Mark has worked with companies such as Hasselblad, Rotolight, Columbia clothing and photographed many actors and musicians such as Boy George, Hannah Waddington, and Paul Whitehouse.

Marks career starting in the performing arts where he starred in west end shows such as Les Mis, The Lion King, and Starlight Express. His affiliation with the acting world was what led him to be a headshot photographer. Having an abundance of actors around him that needed headshots enabled him to cut his teeth in the trade and he hasn’t looked back since!

He also has a very successful YouTube Channel with over 200k followers which is all about...you've guessed it, photography!

What level do I need to be at?
This course is suited for intermediate photographers and Photoshop users. It is not suited for anyone who hasn’t used studio lighting, Photoshop and Lightroom or learnt about the basics of photography. In this case, please take a look at our Photography, Studio Lighting and Photoshop courses.

I’m not in the UK, will this course still be suitable for me?
Yes. All skills taught are the same worldwide.

What’s the difference between ‘This course only’ and ‘Become a Member’?

Do I need Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Affinity for this course?
It depends. If you want to follow along with the edits then the answer is yes. However, if you edit your work in a different program then you can simply use the same editing techniques in whatever program you are used to. The raw files provided will open in any editing program that supports raw editing. If you wish to buy Adobe editing software we recommend buying their ‘Photography Plan (20GB)’ which includes Photoshop CC, Lightroom Classic, and Lightroom CC for a monthly fee.
